COMMON QUESTIONS AND THE ANSWERS

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer commonly caused by exposure to asbestos. More than one hundred million people have been exposed to asbestos at work and in the home. Those who mine asbestos, produce products from asbestos, work with asbestos products, live with asbestos workers, or work in buildings containing asbestos are most at risk.

Asbestos is a mineral that's found naturally in the environment. Asbestos fibers are strong and resistant to heat, making them useful in a wide variety of applications, such as in insulation, brakes, shingles, flooring and many other products.
When asbestos is broken up, such as during the mining process or when removing asbestos insulation, dust may be created. If the dust is inhaled or swallowed, the asbestos fibers will settle in the lungs or in the stomach, where they can cause irritation that may lead to mesothelioma. Exactly how this happens isn't understood.

It can take 20 to 40 years or more for mesothelioma to develop after asbestos exposure.

Living with or even washing the clothing of someone who worked with asbestos also increases the risk of developing mesothelioma. The diagnosis may be suspected based on chest X-ray and CT scan findings, and is confirmed by either examining fluid produced by the cancer or by a tissue biopsy of the cancer. Some people with years of asbestos exposure never develop mesothelioma. And yet, others with very brief exposure develop the disease.
The link between asbestos and mesothelioma has been well known for decades. Many corporations that manufactured or handled asbestos-related products filed bankruptcy. The bankruptcy courts forced these corporations to set up trust funds, where money could be set aside for present and future claims of persons who developed injuries or died because of asbestos exposure.

Because many asbestos companies went bankrupt, trust funds have been established for victims of asbestos-related diseases.

Even though the cancer causing properties of asbestos were well-known, many corporations failed to warn employees and their families of the danger of working with asbestos.

Nothing can ever replace your loss but filing a claim can provide financial compensation to those affected by the negligence of others.
Lung cancer is NOT the same disease as asbestosis. Lung cancer can be caused by exposure to asbestos as well as many other things, such as smoking.

Almost all lung cancers are asbestos related! It is estimated that more than half of all occupational related cancers are caused by asbestos. Smoking can also increase your chances of developing asbestos related lung cancer.

Asbestos related lung cancer is similar to mesothelioma in that both diseases are cancers. Asbestos related lung cancer develops inside the lungs themselves, whereas mesothelioma is a cancer that occurs in different parts of the body, and most commonly in the lining of the tissue that surrounds the internal organs.
When asbestos is broken up, such as during the mining process or when removing asbestos insulation, dust may be created. If the dust is inhaled or swallowed, the asbestos fibers will settle in the lungs or in the stomach, where they can cause irritation that may lead to asbestos related lung cancer and mesothelioma. Exactly how this happens isn't understood.

It can take decades between asbestos exposure and the onset of asbestos related lung cancer.
